I was just curious if anyone has insured a guitar and what the conditions are if you insure one. I have heard that if you insure it, it can't leave your house, but that sounds kind of silly and I didn't know if that was actually true, so I thought I'd ask and see if anyone knows about this type of thing. Just curious.

You can add it to your House Contents policy but it mostly has to stay in the house........I think if you piped up and told them you played professionally around town or wnet travelling with it a lot they might refuse cover for it on the basis the risk of it getting stolen was much higher....Obviously if you are lucky enough to own a genuine 1959 Gibson Les Paul or a first year Tele or Strat, they may want to know how you are securing the guitar/s inside the premises & the security level may sway how much you pay for the privelege....
Funnily enough my hearing aids are covered on my House Contents policy as a prosthetic but obviously where ever I go they go too. :dontknow: ...Add ons can cost as much as the premium cost if they wanna be ash-holes with you.

I have insured guitars. Basically it has to do with usage purpose.
You run it under a personal home owners policy, it normally will not be covered outside the home unless you can prove the reason it was outside was for recreational and not business use.
If you are using it for business use (read as receiving ANY compensation, and that includes gifts and gratiuities), you will need to get a business policy. At that point you need to consult a CPA for the best way to do this. For myself I created an S-Corp. I classified the business as music production rather than musician. It was a little easier to the the business covereage to cover them at my house that way.

The Musicians Union in the UK. Membership automatically gets you £2000 worth of instrument cover, legal support, discount on seminars, £20,000,000 in liability insurance. Lots of contracts you can use as a professional plus loads of other great stuff. And its pretty inexpensive too. £81 a year.

I've just been thinking about this stuff lately. I'm saving up for a new acoustic, and it's going to cost me an a pretty penny. In a year or two, I'm probably going to make another major instrument purchase with part of my inheritance, and that might be an even prettier penny. Hmmm...

Not really got anything to post personally but thanks for posting about this elfro, if i get better and do more properly with my bass ill definately think of joining that as a safety net and such.
