Almost finished swamp ash Velocity build

Well, I'm nearing completion on my swamp ash velocity. I picked up the body during the Screaming Deals sale earlier this year, and have been slowly laboring away at it ever since. The stain is Minwax, but I wish I'd been patient enough to order dye. Oh well. The color is fine, but I think it could be better. The clear coat is Tru-Oil, around 40 coats due to some trial and error with the application process. I read at least a dozen walkthroughs of Tru-Oil application--all different, I might add--and ended up just figuring it out as I went. I do wish that I'd used a more pasty grain filler, rather than the Birchwood Casey sealer/filler.

The neck is from a previous Warmoth build in 2011 (note the Gibson-correct headstock). It's all mahogany, rosewood fingerboard, 24 3/4" conversion scale, SRV profile, 6130 (I think) frets. Other than the profile, I was trying to get as close to Gibson as possible on that one. The humbucker is a "Tres Hombres" from JS Moore Pickups. Single volume and tone. Wilkinson tremolo (which I'm still dialing in). The wiring worked on the first try, but I think I have a grounding issue (not uncommon in guitars where I do the wiring myself!), leading to some buzz when I'm not touching the strings. The pickup cavity, control cavity, and control plate are all painted with shielding paint.

She plays great, a real rock machine! It's a bit neck-heavy, what with the all-mahogany neck and the locking tuners. I also don't like having the open tremolo cavity on the back, it catches my belt buckle. I was actually a bit surprised that Warmoth didn't include a cover, or even the appropriate route for a cover.

The remaining step is to trace and cut a tortoiseshell pickguard and truss rod cover. My plan is something along the lines of a '69 Tele Thinline, with the guard sweeping down under the knobs. I've got an artsy friend working on the outline, then I'll go cut it on the router.

Nice! Simple and elegant. I like it a lot  :icon_thumright:
I'm not sure you would need a pickguard, it looks great as it is.

Yeah, my first build was definitely not simple, although I still think it turned out to be elegant. Here's the sisters together. The SG is now 5 years old!

Now that's a beautiful SG. My favourite shape (my first proper guitar was a new -75 SG ... ahh, the memories ...)
I think I've seen that one in Warmoth's gallery, if I'm not mistaken.

That Velocity looks nice! I like the simplicity.

Incidentally, there's no routing for trem covers on any guitars other than the occasional custom unit, and many if not the majority of folks don't use covers anyway. If you want one, it's typically a surface-mount plate, like a pickguard.

@ Logrinn - I've always been partial to the SG body shape, too. My first Gibson was a '61 SG-shape Melody Maker. Back in the '70s, you could buy those anywhere for ~$100 because there was no such thing as a "vintage" market. Guitars were either "new" or "used", and used ones weren't worth much :icon_biggrin:

Oh, yes, I remember those days too. I had a SG-shaped '61 Les Paul Jr once. One of the best guitars I've ever owned. Unfortunately it got knocked over and the headstock broke. Ah, well ...

Anyway, here ends the hijack. Now let's get back to the original post.

That there's a beauty.  I actually like the color.  I like it a lot.

In re: Trem cover, it's definitely an add-on.  Some folks don't want 'em, and the ones who do don't all want the same one.  Many want to match the pickguard, others may think plain black or white suffices for the side that doesn't face the audience.

But anyway - thanks for sharing, and may you enjoy many happy hours of shaking the rafters with it.

Just to update now that I've spent some time cutting pickguards. I cut myself a trem cover, as well as a pickguard inspired by the '69 Tele Thinline. I really like how it turned out!

Good job! That looks really good on there. Myself, I sometimes think I'd rather take a beating than make pickguards/covers.

Oh yeah, it was a serious pain in the ass. I effed up the first one and had to order another sheet of material and make a new template. FYI, Guitar Fetish had the best prices I found on pickguard material.

Nice job on that Pickguard.

I agree Kevin. Made a couple myself, real PITA!
