so I finally placed my order today for my next Warmoth.

Rear oute Strat Mahogany Body / Flame Maple top hardtail.  I'm having Warmoth do the finish.  It's going to have a Tobacco sunburst front/back.  The waiting game is for real here. Until it shows up I have no idea what it will look like.  I'm hoping for a light finish but I guess they (the finisher) just decides what works best with the wood.

I recieved some parts for x-mas and this is the body they will go on.

I'm still dreaming of options for the neck and I'll order that in a couple of weeks.

Oh! Nice!
Hope you get it awesome!
You should ask for putting a note of the light finish, not sure how they would think or do about, but a note to the painter would not be that big thing, just to give him idea...

cheers!

tried that.  The response was that it's left to the finisher to decide based on how light or dark the wood is.  You'd think that maple would be light, but with a mahogany back I don't know.

My problem is I wanted a hardtail and I'm tired of waiting on the showcase to have the magic combo of wood/bridge/finish.

I was going to settle on a string through t.o.m. but ALMOST ALL the bridges in showcase have that arched pattern on the string through.

I asked for and recieved (thanks Santa) a Gotoh hardtail bridge.  http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Electric_guitar,_non-trem_bridges/Gotoh_Hardtail_Bridge.html  I settled on that because it's adjustable, like a strat bridge, but a little more solid than a vintage one.

The body will have the string through only holes. I'll have to drill the rest myself.

Is the sunburst front and back, or transparent brown on the back (mahogany)?  I've got the Tobacco Burst on ash.  I think you'll like it. Even on it darkest portion, it's never completely opaque like a normal 2 or 3 tone burst, it's still transparent enough to see the grain.

sunburst front and back.

there are lots of cool Tobacco Sunbursts in the showcase.  Some I like more than others, but I'm sure it will turn out nice.

almost went that route for my strat but spotted a showcase piece very close to my specs and went for that! the only difference was like you, i wanted a hardtail strat. all the best! am sure it will turn out beautifully.

There's the hardtail love I have been looking for.  My first Warmoth is a hardtail Strat.  I kind of settled for a second choice finish, as the body had the right woods and was a hardtail, but I opened that box and was very happy with what I ended up with.  There aren't all that many cheryburst strats around either, so it adds to the custom vibe.  Best of luck to both of you.

ok, so I havent even seen the body but neck options clutter my mind.

1) "classic" Birdseye maple neck / Brazilian Rosewood board

2) Goncalo Alves neck / Pau Ferro board (G.A. looks kinda cool, like a vintage amber sometimes...but would it clash with the Tobacco Brst finish?)

3) Wenge neck / Macassar Ebony board (the most exotic and most expensive option...I'm sure I'd love it but $$$)

4) Quartersawn Maple neck / Ebony board (this is going to be my drop #C guitar so neck stability is a premium)

any ideas?

I thought about the rosewood thing...a lot.  But I can't afford a Brazilian neck and I think the Indian rosewood could end up being muddy.  (somebody let me know if I'm on the right track here)

If I do a Birdseye neck I will most likely go with the 59 roundback contour.  Other than than that most of my wood choices are as much for stability as looks and tone.

If I was into big bluesy bends not mindless noodling (hey, I said it) I might go for a thicker neck.  For how I play a thin neck  just fits me better.

I don't think GA would clash with tobacco burst.  That's the combo I'm going with on my tele

Hummm really don't think so... It's more about pickups than the necks... Never had a full rosewood neck (until I finish my L5S ), but people say it has a tad more highs than Mahogany...

It's going with humbuckers or single-coils?
I'm sure that if you choose the right pickups, it'll sound amazing...
And I think it'll have the best look with the tobacco burst

EMG humbuckers.....85 bridge 81 neck.  Seems to be the current trend to reverse that set, I can always change them back.

please, no suggestions on what I should use instead. I already have them waiting on the body.

Hum I've seen only one guy reversing them... I think you'll be alright with any position you put them... In deed, even more that you said EMG I would say Rosewood...

Tobacco can vary from Brownished edges with amber centre to Black edges with light brownish centre...
Dark Tobacco
Light Tobacco

So Gonçalo Alves, it's yellow with red stripes or amber/redish... it can or not look cool on the Tobacco, depending in how goes the finish and the G.A. that you get... I think that if you get a dark Tobacco with redish Gonçalo, it would look weird... Think the same about Pau Ferro with a dark Tobacco...

How about a matching headstock veener and finish? (In that case you would have to hurry up to have them painted together).

The neck will be 25.5" or 24.75"?

I think the best bets if are:
1) wait for the body get ready to order or
2) order the matching one (but would have to be maple, what I tend to have prejudice :laughing7: )

Also can't see why the Wenge and Ebony would be "$$$", if you get a Maple+BR RW it's $203 + paint = +$65... The wenge + Jet/Macassar Ebony is $273, just $5 more... If you go to Unique Choice it gets $80 more in the worse case... Not horribly more, IMHO...

really all the necks are close in price.

The only option I'm for sure with is a LSR roller nut.  I just love the thing.  I'll do my own finish if it's maple (Tru-oil believer here) and I've never been a fan of painted headstocks on strats.

but if we are adding it up.

Birdseye Maple/ Brazilian Rosewood $284

Goncalo/Pau Fero $292 (I agree, depending upon how the body turns out it could look really cool or it could really suck)

Wenge/Macassar Ebony $318 (what I'd love to have)

Qartersawn Maple/Ebony $258

or your suggestion Rosewood/Brazilian Rosewood $328 (if I went with rosewood I'd want a brighter fingerboard, possably even ebony)

they are all within $70 of each other, but I was hoping to keep it under $300 for the neck.  I know the guitar will last a lifetime but I have some other parts to buy.

in the end, if I order the neck before the body arrives I kmow the maple necks would look fine, and the dark Wenge would look cool with anything.

You have no idea how close you are with that.  My new years resolution?....no beer Sunday through Thursday  I know it's a harsh measure but it had to be done.
