59' Roundback Love

I ordered a 59' roundback along with the Tele body last fall and I really loved it. I loved it so much I had to have one for this guitar.

This guitar I have had for about a year. It was built as a demo guitar since I needed one that did not have exotic woods on the neck or body. Originally I borrowed the neck from my hollow Ziricote strat. It was a maple neck with rosewood board and SRV contour. I thought it was great.. until I tried the 59'.

I have always liked a thicker neck and the 59' is just right.  :icon_thumright: It is not too thick and the shape is very comfortable. It makes me forget that I'm holding something and helps me concentrate on what's being played. It just disappears!

I think I'm love with maple necks again too. The one piece neck is light and very responsive. I also appreciate the vintage modern build, very stable and I like the rod access at the head. I ordered this one out of the showcase. It's a birdseye maple and the vintage tint gloss finish is also, just right.

I am trying the TUSQ nut for the first time. It works very well with the tremolo. I have not noticed any pinging or hanging and the guitar comes right back to pitch every time. I thought I liked the LSR nut, but I am beginning to think I like this better. You may notice the lack of string trees. I don't like them and won't put them on unless absolutely forced to. The tuners are my second go around for the Gotoh vintage lockers. I really like these. Classic look with modern function.

I am truly impressed and inspired by the 59' and I am always impressed by Warmoth quality. The frets were perfect and the finish flawless. The contour option is a huge thing to offer and much appreciated.

Wow, you're not going to tell us what brand of pickups you put in this beast?  :laughing11:

I kid.  That's really beautiful.  Maple/Maple is sooooo nice.

Nope!

I was just crowing about the neck. It probably should have went in the strat section and I meant to get some opinions but was tired and forgot.

I forgot to mention that it was a 1.75" nut. Nice and wide!

I would encourage others to give them a try.

Nice Guitar TroubledTreble, I just love them thick necks...the tone is way better for sure...and for bluesy stuff it isn't necessary to be able to fly up the neck at break neck speed. I too have gotten inspired to go all Maple, Vintage Modern and also with the Black Tusq Nut on my next build, so Im glad to hear your favorable take on that. Thats a great looking and Im betting a great sounding strat as well...make sure to post pics in the Strat Gallery. :icon_thumright:

What a timely post.  I've been wrestling with buying a neck - some of which I have chronicled (which I won't go into here so as not to bore the community) - and loved your post.  How big are your hands?  I'm leaning toward the 1 3/4" nut, the black nut, Angled Pro (so no string trees) and black grover tuners - all on an all maple neck.  I can either put it on a black pearl body or a red wine metalic ... today, I'm leaning toward red wine.  Currently I'm debating either a boatback or the SRV.  My hand position on the neck blends with the SRV profile really well.  (May I ask how often you have your thumb perpendicular to the neck radius?)  But I wish the SRV came a little bit bigger.

So you don't find the 1 3/4" too massive to find your low E string?
Did you consider either of the jumbo (1") neck depth necks?

Congrats on your neck.

I did consider some of the large necks, but due to this also being a demo guitar decided against it. People of all hands need to be able to play it, at least a little.

I almost always have my thumb hanging over the neck playing bass notes. The wide nut is just right for me, I don't feel so crowded and that is nice to be able to work each string a bit more.

I liked the SRV contour a great deal but I like this a bit more. It would be really great to combine the two... maybe..

As for the angled headstock I don't think it's necessary. I do plenty of tremolo and bending down by the nut and don't have any issues even without string trees. I tend to use 10's at the minimum and switch between 11's and 10.5's. I will say I have only had this neck a short time and am still putting it through the paces.

All in all I don't think you would be disappointed with it if you went with it.

I just got a maple board 59 neck in this week.  I've fought with Strats for years, never been comfortable playing them.  I've been a PRS player since 92, and this neck reminds me of a Wide-Fat.  Most necks have too much shoulder for me and get flat feeling thru the center of the neck.

I've got to finish this neck and get a few more parts.  I'm very excited about getting this guitar together!!  It's going on a Warmoth S body, side jack, Wilk trem (either the 2 point vintage or VG300) finished in black nitro, prolly H/S/S (may switch out the hum for a PhatCat) with a custom James Tyler-inspired pickgaurd.

I order Vintage Modern necks when I have the option. I agree they are very stable, at least in my thick necks. You are right about the maple necks. I have three "exotic" necks but after playing with my friends maple (satin finished) necks I realized Warmoth does an excellent job finishing these necks. They are as good (on feel) as the exotics. Not sticky at all.

As far as neck profiles, I have played with the thin, SRV, 59 and Fat necks. All my guitars have FAT (contour) necks but I can't say any of these profiles is my favorite. I like thick necks but FAT is too thick for me and I really like the asymetric contour of the SRV. The ideal for me would be a thick SRV (1st Fret - 0.950" 12th Fret - 0.900") or 0.940" all the way but I think I won't like the answer if I ask the cost of a custom neck...

Yes ... I try not to think about the existence of a "fat" SRV.  Please, I'm still trying to decide on my first neck, don't speak of such things and make this torture more confusing ...
