I just pull the trem springs, leaves plenty of slack without having to wait for a string change...
That and using a higher end string (like elixirs) on a test bed like that, they take the tension changes well, and stay bright and snappy.
two questions,
Was it a Lam top?
Was it W finished, or did you do it?
My first soloist was W poly finished, and Maple Lam top.
The finger board has almost ZERO gap to the body.
My second Soloist is Swamp ash, no Lam top, DIY finished.
That has a gap of approx 2mm between the board and body.

I for one beg to differ...
That's an overall difference of .08 (in the world of CNC / machining, that's A LOT) over the stock depth of .640, and it allows one to get the string action closer to the body for those of us that prefer a fast more "shreddy" feel.
Or how many screws you put back in the rear cover....
