I'd go for alder, most metal guitarist use guitar bodies made of alder. Just look at jackson, charvel, fender etc all alder, i think mahogany is more rock then metal imo, i do prefer mahogany but for what you wanna play i think alder will suit better, sorry for such a long reply :P

oh also need to replace the switch on my SX cause it's fecked, nice way to get soldering practice

Also I'm happy enough doing the set up myself, I have set up my aria which has a floyd and stays in tune better now that I've messed around with it :)

I have actually taken apart most of my SX guitar before, so I do know where everything goes etc. I think the only thing I would be the most worried about is doing the soldering but a mate of mine knows how to do it so if I am having trouble I can ask him. Thanks for advice guys :D

i've found a good comparision on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nF7TPOKUoqk and i know youtube quality sucks but it's all i have as a reference i'm still prefering the mahogany seems to have more of a punch to it then the korina but it could too bright with maple neck
