    Finishing a quilt tele body

Back for a quick 1 month update! This guitar sounds amazing. I'm no pickup connoisseur, but the Grover Jackson Poblano sounds just killer. Been playing it through my Marshall style setup (D Kowalski dark gene green with gain up or through a pedalpalfx pal800v3), and it really scratches that...

    Berryburst Quilt

Thanks! No controls for now, I find I don't need them when playing on the couch and wanted to maximize the quilt top, but I might drill them in later.

    Berryburst Quilt

I submit for consideration my new berryburst tele-style axe! Build thread Specs: Warmoth Telecaster Replacement Guitar Neck Vintage/Modern Construction Indian Rosewood (One-piece Shaft and Fretboard) Nut Width 1.650" (42mm) - Vintage Medium Standard Thin Neck Back Profile 10" - 16" Compound...

It is done! 🥳 I ended up drying the nitro finish for two weeks and then wet sanded it at 600, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit followed by hand buffing with Meguiar's Mirror Glaze #9. The sanding is where I struggled: I was afraid to level sand too much because my finish seems to be very thin, and I...

    Finishing a quilt tele body

One week of nitro drying complete! A couple observations: - The topcoat surface has definitely flattened out over the course of the week. It also appears a bit more glossy now. - The re-application of the grain filler appears to have helped. Despite the top coat not being level yet, I do not see...

    Finishing a quilt tele body

I've been wearing a respirator, protective goggles and a full body tyvek suit. The nitro spray is extremely pungent, and none of the smell gets through the respirator. I spray outdoors and the body has been drying in a well-ventilated shed. The combination of air flow and general summer heat is...

If I’m honest, I don’t smell any of the nitro on the body already. I imagine the thin coats from rattle cans dry much quicker than the thicker coats from spray guns.

While I wait for the nitro to dry, I made two flamed maple backplates that I plan on dyeing and finishing as well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm on the fence as to how long to wait. I found the debate in this thread useful. I also checked the Gibson process video to confirm that they use 4-6 days for cure time. I will note that I did already sand the finish off the back to reapply the grain filler, and...

    Finishing a quilt tele body

Completed the 15th coat! I tried my best to showcase the current texture of the back and front. On the back I don't see much of the grain texture coming through to the surface, so it's possible the reapplication of the grain filler was successful. The surface is glossy but not level, so I'll be...

Added one more coat today but the high humidity of NJ makes this difficult because, if the humidity is high, the spray can trap moisture which shows up as a chalky white. The next spray coat contains fresh solvent which dissolves the previous finish a bit so it is resolved in subsequent coats...

    Finishing a quilt tele body

Update: I'm up to 12 coats of clear gloss nitro lacquer! No pictures to post because it's hard to capture the gloss sheen without twisting the body in a video. I'm quite surprised how much thinner the finish is compared to my green warmoth tele body. 2 or 3 more layers to go, and, following...

    Finishing a quilt tele body

Appreciate the post for posterity. I’m personally trying to minimize complexity and cost, so one type of spray can for two tasks is optimal for my first finishing job. This thread also has some more discussion on sealers. I’ll post what the finished body looks like and will post updates over...

Thanks for the tips, especially wiping *against* the grain. Lovely neck, but I'm planning to keep mine raw this time.
