It sounds like the distance of the pickup needs to be lowered at the E string.  I have these pups in my '65 P-bass.  They sound great.  Combined with a Warmoth neck - maple/ebony - the sound produced is a wonderfully bright growl.

Based on contribution, among other things, I'd have to fill the blank with Hendrix.  But I will say that losing Roth would have been a tragedy.  I mean... who else could have slapped Van Hagar with something like Eat'em and Smile.
