    Wishlist: 3+2 Warhead fretless

It's a Yamaha Nathan East. Quite a few have similar 3+2 heads; Alembic, Lakland, Klos, Halo to name just a few. The 4+2 applies only to guitars, the 3+1 only to basses. MM didn't think to add 3+2 for basses or 4+3 for 7 string guitars

    Back chambered Tele weight loss

Sanded down 1/4". The back was an unusually figured piece of ash that wasn't big enough for anything else but we saw the possibilities with bookmatching it. It's not exactly "veneer", it's about 1/4" thick.

    Back chambered Tele weight loss

A commercial grade thickness sander is the best way. A planer wouldn't be wide enough. You really want the surface to be flat and level. I was lucky to have a tech with the right stuff.

    Back chambered Tele weight loss

I gotta say though it was a real PITA to do. If you don't have a commercial grade thickness sander you may as well not attempt it. Mark Arnquist is a platinum level tech whose gift is thinking outside the box with the skill and precision to execute it

    Wishlist: 3+2 Warhead fretless

Just ordered a G5 "in stock" bass body. I want a 3+2 Warhead style headstock with a straight angle. Frankly, the 3+2 Warmoth offers is butt ugly and it's a tilt back. The standard 4+1 Fender neck wouldn't look right either. I don't know how Warmoth does their CAD but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't...

Does It *Have* To Be Wood?

I'm still struggling with this. I've seen some Macassar ebony with some stunning streaks of white in it. The downside is that I can't really see it when I'm playing and the density can vary a lot which affects tone and contributes to dead spots.

Does It *Have* To Be Wood?

Actually, comparing 5/16" 5 string blanks, Richlite is closer to $45, Junk ebony blanks can be had for $25 but a AAA grade Gabon ebony 'board can run over $100. I wouldn't expect the average builder to have a CNC machine but Warmoth does. With as many manufacturers who've added Richlite to their...

Does It *Have* To Be Wood?

Sustainable? Yes, but the cost effectiveness is a wash. It's not cheap and depending on the capability of your CNC machine, carbide tip cutters may not be adequate making diamond tip cutters necessary. Aside from the sustainability, the main attraction for me is the sound and feel of it.

Does It *Have* To Be Wood?

I've never heard of it before but I'm a little skeptical of using a softwood that's inconsistent in its density and not especially well suited to epoxy saturation. The Richlite matrix uses an engineered paper designed to be saturated with resin.

Does It *Have* To Be Wood?

I had an acoustic with a Macassar ebony board. It had a long white stripe in the shape of a lightning bolt. Looks cool definitely but the even density of Richlite makes for a more consistent vibration chain, ie no dead spots.

Does It *Have* To Be Wood?

As one who's paid huge $$ for boutique acoustic guitars I totally "get" the preference for real wood in our components. I've been seeing more and more high end instruments using Richlite for fingerboards. From what I've played it makes sense. The material has the same density as ebony but it's...

    Back chambered Tele weight loss

That's what it was advertised as and my luthier guru concurred.

Fretboard alternative to rosewood - Bocote, Goncalo Alves, Kingwood

I'm surprised that Richlite hasn't been mentioned, especially by bassists. It has the same density as ebony but it's consistent tip to tail and rdge to edge. No dead spots and it sounds great. Highly polished on a fretless bass it sings, It sounds great on acoustics and polished on a fretted...

    Back chambered Tele weight loss

I built my Tele on a DeHavilland body that I picked up online at a really low price. When I got it the swamp ash body alone weighed 8.5lbs. Not willing to torture myself with that I took off 1/4" from the back and routed out chambers. Also added tummy cut and modest forearm bevel. That got the...

    Gecko 6 in Seattle area?

Anybody have one, preferably fretless, that I might be able to lay hands on? I'm in the north Snohomish County area but I'm willing drive a fair distance to check one out. TIA!
