    Flame Korina L5S

Jack, Simply awesome! Did you use grain filler on this beauty?  And if so, did you apply if before or after you applied the minwax stain (I read in your other post about this guitar about the minwax stain). Enjoy! -Chris

    Tinting Shellac

Thanks for the input!  Your SG looks great (I bet it sounds great also)!  I am going to try tinting the shellac on a test board this weekend.  Hopefully I will get the results I am looking for...if not I will give oil-based stain a try. Chris

    Tinting Shellac

Well, I was all set to finish my all mahogany LP with Target Coatings water-based finishes and then saw a gorgeous, oil finished (tung oil) Tele that made me think I want to do this to my LP. So on to my question... I want to slightly tint my LP with a trans-dye (either antique maple or brown...

    TransTint Dyes - Mixing Ratios

I just purchased some TransTint Dyes (http://www.targetcoatings.com/dyes-trans-tint.html) to tint my grain filler and my spray lacquer.  What ratio of dye-to-filler and dye-to-lacquer should I use? Many thanks in advance! -Chris

    Natural Binding

Thanks for the reply -CB-!  Any recommendation on the type of tape to use?  Can I just use 3M purple (freshly painted - easy release), 3M Blue (easy release)?  Should I use automotive pin striping tape? -Chris

    Natural Binding

I would like to add a natural binding to my mahogany/mahogany LP project.  I have this edge detail on my PRS and I like the look.  I plan to do the following: 1).  Fill the grain (clear – or I may tint the grain filler with brown mahogany trans tint dye) 2).  Seal the guitar with clear shellac...

Korina replacement wood for testing purposes / Spray vs. Brush

Water-based products are easier and safer for me to use and clean-up.  I have nothing really against NC lacquer, but being new at this I am going the water-based route (I would have the same learning curve with either NC or water-based products). -Chris

Korina replacement wood for testing purposes / Spray vs. Brush

SkuttleFunk thanks for the reply!  I just ordered the two items you listed from Harbor Freight.  I have changed my mind on the black korina.  Today I ordered a mahogany on mahogany LP body with a mahogany/rosewood neck.  Plus, I am going to use Target Coatings water-based lacquer instead of...

Mahogany Grain Fill and Finishing Process Order

CB thanks for the reply!  I already have some red oak from a previous home improvement project.  Would this fill, seal, and top coat similar to mahogany?  These scraps would make for great test boards.

Mahogany Grain Fill and Finishing Process Order

Today, I placed my first order with Warmoth for a carved Les Paul body (mahogany on mahogany) and neck (mahogany with Brazilian rosewood).  I am going to be using Target Coatings finishing supplies (e.g. Oxford HSF High Solids Grain Filler & Glaze and Oxford Ultima Water-based Spray Lacquer).  I...

Korina replacement wood for testing purposes / Spray vs. Brush

I am about to embark on my first guitar project.  I am thinking about getting a black korina LP body with a korina/ebony neck.  I would like to make the korina an amber or light tobacco color.  Before I commit to a stain I want to try out my finishing skills on some scrap wood.  I cannot get...
