    Tru-Oil on Mahogany Neck

Hi Folks, Any issues with doing a tru-oil finish on a mahogany neck?  Just wondering if it will be too "breathable" and result in the neck being unstable. If good, how many coats would you recommend, and should I consider using a grain-filler as well before starting the finish process? Cheers.

Loud cracking sound when switching tube amp from "standby" to "on"

Trying to figure out what is wrong - if anything with my amp (Boogie Mark 5-35) In the last few weeks, I've had two instances where when switching the amp from "standby" to "on", I've heard a large cracking sound coming from the amp.  Amp wasn't cold either time and had been running a good five...

It's official - Gibson files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

It was a long time coming: https://new.reorg-research.com/data/firstday/437046_0.pdf Hope someone competent takes over and sorts the mess out. Shame it had to come to this but things can only improve.

    PRS Trem

Has anyone ever installed a PRS trem on a Warmoth body?  If so, would love to hear about whether this worked out or if there were major incompatibilities that couldn't be overcome. Mulling this over as an option on my next build...  would get a "back trem cavity only" route and then have...

    G String Warble / Flutter

Wondering if anyone has come across this before: I rejigged my Jazzmaster for C standard tuning.  I'm using 12/56 strings and have re-setup / intonated the guitar properly.  So far so good.  However, when I play the G string (now tuned to D# with a 24 plain gauge wire) the notes just flutter...

    Stripping Nitro Finish

Hi Guys, Long time no post - looking for some more finishing wisdom from the Warmoth crowd... In short: I have a maple neck that has a crappy clear nitro finish.  I had it redone a few years back (it previously had about an inch thick coat of poly) and it's fair to say they did a bad job on...

Graph Tech Ratio locking tuned machine heads - Gimmick or worth a shot?

Hi Guys, Just wondering if anyone has given these a shot yet? http://www.graphtech.com/products/brands/ratio/product-detail/prl-8341-c0-ratio-locking-tuned-machine-heads---electric-3-3-vintage-chrome-2-pin?id=20ffbc2b-e6dc-4d11-8e7f-389975c18cc0 Don't care all that much about the tuning ratio...

Winter is coming... and along with it cold dry weather.

Hi Guys, Looking for some suggestions on dealing with humidity (or lack thereof) up in the Northeast this coming winter. Just got myself a new place which includes a 5 x 5 cedar lined / carpeted room in the basement which has now become my dedicated guitar storage room.  I've put in a...

    Unboxing the Bare Knuckles

Just got these in the post.  I'm always impressed with their packaging.  New this time are the coasters which I think are a very nice touch.  They also threw in a  7 string string set - so had to count the pole pieces on the HB to make sure they had got that right! Once again, delivered in 6...

    Jazzmaster Redux

Busy day for me on the forum.  This one has been done for some time but just getting round to taking pictures / posting today.  I had mentioned here and there that I never quite got along with the Wolfgang neck that I originally put on this baby so I decided to do a major revamp as the guitar...

    NGD - Non Warmoth

I’d mentioned that I was looking at a Taylor 814 a while back.  Instead of going for the second hand option, I ended up dropping by my friendly neighborhood guitar store and walking away with a brand new Taylor 814ce “First Edition” 2014 limited series – one of 200 being made.  Not entirely sure...

After market electronics on an acoustic?

Hi Guys, For my next trick, I was planning on blowing a big chunk of change on an acoustic – ballpark 3 grand.  Was looking into the usual suspects: Taylor 814ce etc.  I just have a couple of requirements: a cutaway and onboard electronics.  That aside, I’m pretty easy so long as it plays like...

Can I fit standard single coils in top routed humbucker slots?

I've seen one other post on this in the forum but it wasn't quite clear on whether any additional wood work would be involved or not. Question is pretty simple really: I currently have a top routed strat that is routed for H-S-H and was wondering if it was possible to simply swap out the...

    LP 60s slim taper contour

OK, realize I'm just flying the flag here as this one has come up more than a few times already.  The votes are in and we definitely need a new neck contour... more than a Standard Thin - and less than a 59.  And no, an asymetric neck such as the Wolfgang is not the answer.  I own one and the...

    Telepaul is done

Well here it is.  Telepaul complete.  Been built for a few weeks now but it's taken me a while to get some half decent pictures... As per previous posts, spec is as follows: - One piece mahogany body / Flame maple top with fireburst finish – clear gloss on the back.  Vintage tint masked...

    telepaul has landed

Well the Telepaul is here… pretty much right on time.  Hopefully this will give the forum a good view of what the carved top tele really looks like.  One of the big problems with everything out there to date – including on the official site - is that you can’t quite tell just how much wood there...

    Telepaul ordered at last

Here's to number 3 - Telepaul Finally got my act together and after months of agonizing over various details, I've put in my order and am expecting my telepaul to show up some time mid july.  Was initially considering putting a bunch of questions to the forum but somehow managed to figure out...

Mahogany / Satin or Raw Rosewood - what to do??

Just about ready to pull the trigger on my telepaul project. The purist side of me is telling me to get an all mahogany guitar, and therefore a finished neck.  The advantage with that is that it will be faithfull to the les paul spec - albeit in carved top tele format - and the clear finish on...

    Telepaul

I may have mentioned a couple of times in passing that I really had no interest in building a Les Paul based W simply on the basis that only a set neck will do where an LP is concerned. I'm sticking with that.  However, now that we have the carved top tele, it seems to me there is nothing that...

    Dinky Jazzmaster

Jagstang / Mustang just won't do.  Needs to be the dinky version of the JM shape / 25.5 scale etc. Yep, I would really dig that if it were available.  Come on, you'd sell at least 6 a year!  that's got to put it near the top of the list!
