I did as Rick suggested above and when I turn down the tone pot the noise went down as well, so it's definitely something with the pot. I cut off a section of copper shielding where the soldering stuck out just far enough to come into contact. And voila! The hissing and crackling are gone...

I actually bought the Loaded Pickguard and moved the parts over. It's a little cheaper than buying parts separately and I don't have to do any soldering.

It has grown on me a bit the more I look at it.  Maybe after a few coats of oil the middle will show more subtle variations.

I was hoping for nice streaks, but one big dark patch? I know, it is what it is.  The body is sanded very smooth and ready to go except some burn marks.  Maybe I can do a reverse burst? correction: the burn marks are actually small streaks.
